Mr. Avent was born Aug. 28, 1909, in Hamilton County to Julius and Eula Avent.

Some of his earlier moves in life were to Abilene and Merkel. He finally moved to Tulia when he was 12, in a covered wagon. Jack began his schooling in Buffalo Gap in a one-room schoolhouse and later finished school at Valley View.

He was married to Alpha Odneal, who preceded him in death. Mr. Avent had owned ranches in South Dakota, Colorado and Texas, where he was active in the cattle business. Ranching was his favorite hobby. He has been a resident at Craig Methodist, where he will be greatly missed.

Survivors include a brother, Bill Avent of Amarillo; a sister, Madeline Reck of Austin; and numerous nieces and nephews.
