Mr. Jesse Douglas Avent, 84, a loving father, grandfather and great-grandfather, formerly of Greenwood Terrace in Burlington, died Saturday morning, June 28 2003, at the Oaks at Forsyth in Winston-Salem.

He was born on April 7, 1919, to Margaret Hamlet Avent and Edward White Avent on his family farm in Bynum.

Doug was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Burlington where he previously served as a deacon and elder.

He owned and operated J. Douglas Avent Appraisal Co. until his retirement in 1984.

Mr. Avent served in the U.S. Navy in the Pacific in World War II.

He was past president of the Lions Club and the Board of Realtors, chairman of the Planning Board and a member of the Wildlife Club.

Doug was an avid golfer and outdoorsman, but his greatest love was for his family.

Doug is survived by his wife, Billie Coleman Avent, also of the Oaks in Winston-Salem; a son, Michael Douglas Avent Sr. and wife, Deanna; two grandchildren, Michael Douglas Avent Jr. and wife, Missy, Kristina Avent Gordon and husband, Greg; five great-grandchildren, Mitchell Edward Avent, Darby Elizabeth Avent, Sydney Elizabeth Gordon, Michael Ross Gordon and Jenna Kate Gordon, all of Winston-Salem. 

His six brothers and two sisters preceded him in death.
