Dr. Raphael Joseph DiNapoli, Jr., 76, passed away on June 27, 2010. A resident of Durham, NC, Ray was one of four children born to the late Raphael J. DiNapoli, MD and Pauline Groeger of Brooklyn, NY.

He attended the College of Holy Cross, Downstate Medical Center at the State University of New York, and the Harvard School of Public Health. He further trained in Aerospace Medicine at the USAF School of Aerospace Medicine and US Army Aviation Center, and was considered an expert in this field, writing numerous papers and giving frequent presentations. Ray’s extensive military service allowed him the opportunity to travel across the world, including time spent in Korea, Vietnam and the Panama Canal Zone, with further appointments and presentations in Spain, Iran, Saudi Arabia, Bahrain Island, and Turkey, and throughout North America and Europe.

Following his military service, he served as Chief and Medical Director for various public health offices for the State of North Carolina, but eventually returned to work as the Chief Medical Officer for the US Military Entrance Program, where he continued to work until his death.

Ray is survived by his wife, Joan Bridgers DiNapoli; son, Michael Raphael DiNapoli, wife Amanda and grandson Jacob Michael; daughter, Lisa DiNapoli Broderick and husband Tony; son, Leo Anthony DiNapoli, wife Jessica and grandson Anthony Robert; sister, Barbara Cody and husband Bob; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his sisters, Alicia and Carol.
