Tom Avant was born June 16, 1926 in Cookson, OK and passed from our arms into those of our heavenly father on August 6, 2011, in Oklahoma City.
Tom attended Tahlequah High School before joining the U.S. Army Air Corp in 1945. He served at the end of World War II and during the Korean War.
Upon leaving the service he worked with the Oklahoma Department of Wildlife until his retirement in 1988.
He was very proud of his Cherokee Heritage and was an active member of the Cherokee Tribe.
He will be remembered as a loving husband, father, and friend to all who knew him.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Troy & Sallie Ballew-Avant, of Cookson; sister, Jewel Carlile of Tahlequah; brother, Marion Avant of Tahlequah.
Tom is survived by; brother, William Avant of Memphis; his wife of 62 years, Wilma Avant, of the home; and 4 children, daughter, Janet Cook of Chickasha; son, Tom of Blanchard; son, Scott of Fort Worth; son, Troy of Oklahoma City. Tom had 11 grandchildren, and 10 great-grandchildren.
