Ruth Marshall Porter Hood, age 87, passed away on Saturday, February 25, 2017. Ruth was born on May 11, 1929 in Charlotte, NC and grew up in the Dilworth and Latta Park sections of town. She was married for 62 years to the late Dr. Christopher Hood, and was the daughter of the late Charles Porter and Corille Avant Porter. 

Ruth was a graduate of Central High School and received a B.A. in Religion and Philosophy from Queens College. Ruth and Chris lived in Philadelphia, PA, Denver, CO, Atlanta, GA and Columbia, SC during Chris’ time in medical school, his internship, residency and Army service. They returned to Charlotte where she was a homemaker, and mother. 

Ruth’s life was forever changed by a near fatal car accident in 1965. She struggled physically to overcome the serious injuries she sustained, and the many surgeries that followed. Through it all, she never let it stop her from being a great mother to her four children.

Ruth is survived by her daughter Amy Hood, and her sons, Dr. Renwick Hood (Anne); Coleman Hood (Carol Jeanne); Timothy Hood (Sherry). She is also survived by her sister Carolyn Darnell (Ira G.); and her brother Dr. Charles Alexander Porter Jr. (Marilyn). Ruth is survived by her nine grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

Dr. Christopher Kennedy Hood CHARLOTTE - Dr. Hood, 83, died Thursday, March 14, 2013.

He was born March 30, 1929 to the late Cyrus Lee and Gladys Kennedy Hood, in Mooresville, NC. He was married for sixty-two years to Ruth Marshall Porter Hood, of Charlotte.

Dr. Hood graduated from Charlotte's old Central High School ('46), Davidson College, and Jefferson Medical College. He served in the United States Army Medical Corps. After completing his residency at Georgia Baptist Hospital in Atlanta, Dr. Hood returned to Charlotte to open his practice in Obstetrics and Gynecology. He was joined the following year by Dr. William Eubanks, his medical partner for the remainder of his career. For many years, he was also joined in practice with his brother-in-law, Dr. Charles Porter. Dr. Hood practiced forty-six years, retiring in 1997.

Dr. Hood was a life Member of the North Carolina Medical Society and the Mecklenburg Medical Society. He was a Diplomat of the American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology and a Fellow of the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists. He served on the staff of Presbyterian Hospital (Chief of Staff of Obstetrics and Gynecology), Mercy Hospital, and Carolina Medical Center. Dr. Hood was known for his love of family and his practice of medicine. He was devoted totally to his wife, his children, and the care of his patients. Dr. Hood was a lifelong member of Sardis Presbyterian Church.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by three sons and one daughter: Renwick (Anne), Coleman (Carol Jeanne), Timothy (Sherry), and Amelia. Additionally, he is survived by his sister, Melissa (Bill) DeVane. His grandchildren are Christopher T. Hood, Andrew Hood, Rachel Elder, Rebecca Davis, Megan Williams, Jessica Hood, Casey Hood, Madison Hood, and Christopher R. Hood. His great-grandchildren are Will and Caroline Elder.
