Misc. Notes
Betty Mae “Mimi” Harwood Avent, 97, of Canyon, passed away on Monday, December 12, 2022.

Betty was born on December 5, 1925 in Olustee, Oklahoma to George “G.W.” and Ola (Lovejoy) Harwood. She was one of 11 children born to George and Ola Harwood. She was one of the younger children. She grew up in Olustee, OK. She had fond memories of walking to school each day carrying lunches prepared by her mother. On snowy days Betty said she and her siblings still had to walk to school and were double wrapped in layers of clothes and had tow sacks wrapped around their shoes to stay warm. Betty also would reflect on how loving her parents and siblings were. They were a very tight knit family who loved to sing together in the evenings sitting around the stove pipe. The Harwood family moved to Canyon Betty’s freshman year in high school. She was a member of the Class of 1944. She was also a member of Canyon High School’s Pep Club. Betty was a fabulous cook and had learned how to cook from her mother-in-law, Peggy Avent.

Betty was set up on a blind date her senior year in high school by Gerald and Juanita Warrick. She married her blind date, Paul Donnell “Don” Avent, on October 17, 1944 while he was home on leave from the Navy. He was a Gunners Mate stationed overseas. Betty still would laugh about the day they got married, and said Don was so nervous he dropped her wedding ring, and it rolled all the way down the aisle to the door of the Justice of the Peace’s office.

Betty lived by the Golden Rule, “Do unto others as you would have them do unto you.” She loved her Lord, family, and friends. In her neighborhood she was known as “Miss Betty” to the children who would love to come visit her while she was working in her yard. The Ranch House also knew her as Miss Betty and would write this on her ticket for her order.

Betty was a member of the University Church of Christ, UCC’s Ladies Bible Class, and Hilltoppers. She also is a former member of the Claude Church of Christ, Fairview Busy Bees in Claude, and University Study Club in Canyon.

Betty worked several jobs. She was a pharmacist after she and Don had gotten married while living in Stinnett. Betty also worked for Levi Strauss in Amarillo, and for Drs. Robert West and Nancy Hinders in Canyon, where she worked until she was 81 as their Chiropractic Assistant.

She is survived by her children, Brenda Avent Paschel and Louis, and Scott Avent and Brenda; grandchildren, Branden Paschel and Alyssa, Mikayla Paschel, Keaton Paschel, Jason Avent and Lisa, and Staci Cooper and Chris; great-grandchildren, Kelsey Paschel, Jacob and Adalyn Avent, and Braden and Cannon Cooper. Betty is also survived by her sisters-in-law, Martha Avent Wilkins and Juanita Avent Allred, as well as her brother-in-law, George Avent and Barbara, many nieces and nephews, and a very dear lifelong friend, Mae Weatherford.

Betty is preceded in death by her husband, Don, on August 23, 1988, her parents, George and Ola Harwood, and her siblings, Floyd Harwood, Buddy Harwood, Hack Harwood, Fred Harwood, Bill Harwood, Ruth Harwood Conrad, Velma Harwood Powers, Bertha Harwood Greteman, Wilma Harwood Prichard, and Letha Harwood Gammon. Betty is also preceded in death by a grandson, Miles Paschel, a great-granddaughter, Reagan Rose Paschel, and several nieces and nephews.
