Misc. Notes
Thoughts & opinions,  by Michael A. Gwinn, 26 Aug 2011, gwinnma@aol.com

Benjamin Ward Avent (b.  24 Aug 1871, Tennessee) was named after (or took on the name of) his Uncle Benjamin Ward Avent "Jr.", (b. abt 1843, TN; d. Nov 1868, MS) and his grandfather Dr. Benjamin Ward "Sr." Avent (b. 19 May 1812, VA).
**** Some researchers state Ben's father was William.  It is my opinion that the only reason they stated this is because Ben is listed as living with a William DUNCAN on the 1900 Eastland Co., Texas Census .... and other amature researchers are duplicating this error, without researching further.
--------------------------------
Fact #1 ..... Benjamin is living with "widowed" Aunt Mary T. (Avent) Morgan & her children (in 1880), Hardeman Co., TN.  Some researchers believe the middle name might have benn "Tabitha".
**** Note: the same "widowed" Aunt Mary T. (Avent) Morgan & her children are living next to her parents 10 years earlier in 1870, proving that Benjamin Ward Avent (b. 1871) was a grandson of Dr. Benjamin Ward Avent (b. 1812, VA) which was married to Nancy Taylor Lytle.  Professional researchers use the earliest census to determine proper age, which is fould on the 1850 Murfreesboro, Rutherford Co., TN census, showing Mary T. (age 14, TN, abt. 1836).

Fact #2 ..... Ben is not Mary T. (Avent) (b. abt 1836, TN) MORGAN's child (clearly states, she was his "Aunt").

Fact #3 ..... he is not Ellen W. (Avent) (b. abt 1839, TN) CHILDRESS' child (she states she had "zero children" on 1900 Census), also if he was her child, he would of been living with her in 1880 and not his Aunt.

Fact #4 ..... he is not William Lytle Avent (b. 1842, TN)'s child, he died as an infant (d. 1843). (see photo attached to William).

Fact #5 ..... he is not Benjamin W. Avent (b. abt 1843, TN)'s child, sources state newspaper article showing he died in 1868, in MS, tracking down a fugitive of the law.

Fact #6 ..... he is not James W. Avent (b. abt 1855, TN)'s child, source states James died in 1867, further proof he's deceased is that this James Avent is not living with his parents on the 1870 Census.

Fact #7 ..... he is not Blanche Lytle (Avent) McRAE's child, she would of been too young (b. Jan 1859, TN).
--------------------------------
THESE ARE THE ONLY POSSIBILITIES....
Possible 1:  .... possible child of: John S. Avent, ... some researchers say his name was John Lytle Avent, one researcher states he die before 1879...??? no source. http://trees.ancestry.com/tree/28697452/person/12082249882

Possible 2:  .... or possible child of Catherine "Kate" Avent & (unknown -James??) ROSS, and took on mother's maiden name because he was raised by his Aunt Mary T. (Avent) Morgan.   Researchers state Catherine died in child-birth delivering her son "James Ross" (b. 1879, TX).   Records show the infant, James Ross (age - 1, TX) living with grandmother, Nancy Taylor (Lytle) AVENT, in Memphis, Shelby Co., TENNESSEE on 1880 Census... **** Note (Fact #1) Benjamin W. Avent (b. 1871) also living in TENNESSEE, in 1880, but in Hardeman County.

Possible 3: .... or possible child of Mattie Avent ..... no theories, other than ... could of took on mother's maiden name, not much is known of Mattie, after 1870 .... note, she was living in Shelby Co., TN in 1870 ...... one researcher states she died in 1873, does not give source, or show any spouses or children.
****** Note:   These claims could be proven, or disproven through a DNA study of descendants.  It is my belief that "
Possibility #2" is the most probable case, but will list as a child of John S. Avent until proven otherwise....
