Albert Jackson (Jack) Avant passed away Monday, March 24th, at the age of 88.

Jack was born September 22, 1925, the third child of George & Virginia Thigpen Avant in Atascosa, TX. He married Lorene Dietrich on May 9, 1948, at Bethany Lutheran Church. 

Jack graduated from Somerset High School at the age of 15 and began working for the War Department, San Antonio Arsenal, at the age of 16 as a mechanic’s helper, specifically working on aircraft engines. He enlisted in the Army Air Corp at age 17 on July 20, 1943, and began pilot training, finishing at Luke Field in Phoenix, AZ. With the close of World War II, he was released from service on October 31, 1945, & returned to Kelly Field to work as an airplane mechanic for the Civil Service attached to the Air Force.

Working his way up throughout his long 40 year career, he eventually retired as a jet engine specialist in F106’s. Duty stations included Kelly Field (AFB) in San Antonio, Loring AFB in Limestone, ME, George AFB in Victorville, CA, & Richards-Gebaur AFB in Kansas City, MO. During the Korean War, he was recalled to duty on July 9, 1951, & served in Korea as a spotter pilot with the 6147th Tactical Control Group (“Mosquitoes”) until his release on December 9, 1952. For his outstanding service, he was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross, three Bronze Stars, & two Air Medals.

As a private pilot, Jack enjoyed many years of stunt flying & re-building antique airplanes until he was forced to stop flying in his late 70’s due to failing eyesight. 

Jack is survived by his wife Lorene of San Antonio; his children: Anthony (Wayne) Avant & wife Donna Christoferson Avant of Ovilla, TX; Charles Avant of San Antonio; Virginia (Ginny) Rauth & husband Jeffrey of Dickinson; Joanne Avant & husband David Denney of Driftwood; grandchildren: Travis Avant & wife Eran of Vallejo, CA; Christine (Chrissy) Avant of Burleson; Erin Rauth Goddard & husband Kevin Heard of Houston; Daniel Rauth & wife Christi of Redondo Beach, CA; Jessica Rauth Moore & husband Mace of Little Rock , AR; Catherine (Cassy) Rauth of Houston; great grandchildren: Cutter Vick, Charlotte Goddard, David Goddard, & Suzanne Goddard , & a sister: Vivian Avant of Waterloo, NY.

Jack was preceded in death by his parents; a daughter in infancy, Susan Avant; 2 brothers, Stanley & Fred Avant, & a sister, Patricia Avant Schoenmaker.

Lorene was born October 8, 1926 , in Gillespie County, Texas, the second child of Arthur and Esther Durst Dietrich. She was named after both of her grandmothers, Martha Crenwelge Dietrich and Hulda Fischer Durst. At Bethany, she was baptized November 7, 1926, by Pastor K. Konzack, confirmed on April 6, 1941, by Pastor Theo M. Haag, and married by Pastor G.A. Poehlmann to Albert (Jack) Avant on May 9, 1948.

Lorene graduated from Fredericksburg High School in 1943. She entered the Cadet Nurses Corp on July 1, 1944, at the P&S Hospital, San Antonio, and graduated in 1947 as a Registered Nurse. Her career took her through private duty, office nurse, hospital nurse, school nurse, in-service trainer nurse and home health nurse. She and the family accompanied Jack to duty stations including Kelly Field (AFB), San Antonio; Loring AFB, Limestone, Maine; George AFB, Victorville, California; Richards-Gebaur AFB, Kansas City, Missouri; and then back to San Antonio .

After many years of service, Lorene retired from the Baptist Memorial Hospital (successor to where she had received her early training) and took another position at the Visiting Nurses Association retiring finally in 1991. Many years of retirement continued in homes in San Antonio, Lubbock, Fredericksburg, Austin, Kyle, Driftwood and Alvin as she followed her family and interests.

Lorene is survived by her children: Anthony (Wayne) and wife Donna Christoferson Avant of Ovilla, Charles Avant of San Antonio, Virginia (Ginny) Avant Rauth of League City, Texas, and Joanne Avant and husband David (Dave) Denney of Driftwood. She was preceded in death by her husband Jack and daughter Susan Avant.

She is survived by her grandchildren: Travis Avant and wife Eran of Avenal, New Jersey, Christine (Chrissy) Avant of Burleson, Texas, Erin Rauth Goddard of Houston, Daniel Rauth of Dallas, Jessica Rauth Moore and husband Mace Moore of Friendswood, Catherine (Casey) Rauth of Dallas and great grandchildren: Cutter Vick, Charlotte Goddard, David Goddard, Suzanne Goddard, Eleanor Moore and Samuel Moore; and many loving nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, brothers Raymond Dietrich, Louis Dietrich and Arthur (Whitey) Dietrich, Jr. and sisters Dora Dietrich (Mrs. Martin) Feuge, Leola Dietrich (Mrs. Walter) Fuhrmann, and Vernell Dietrich (Mrs. Guenther) Maenius.
