Doug Morton lost his long battle with Dementia caused by Normal Pressure Hydrocephalus.
He is survived by his wife, Marilyn Brown; his three children Christine Morton DeMier (Daniel), Holly Morton Chione (Fred) and Dudley Walker Morton (Elizabeth); 6 grandchildren; his sister, Edwina Thirsher; numerous cousins and many, many friends.
Doug was born on October 9, 1939, in Portsmouth, Virginia, to Commander Dudley (Mush) Morton and Harriet Nelson Morton, and graduated from high school in Pelham, New York. He earned a BA in History from the College of William & Mary in Williamsburg, Virginia, in 1962 and then moved to Denver.
In Denver, he met and married Judith Spears, a marriage that produced Chrissy, Holly and Dudley before dissolving. While raising his family, Doug worked in publishing, founding Morton Publishing in 1977. The company now publishes college textbooks relating to biological sciences.
Marilyn Brown came into Doug's life in 1984 and they married in 1987. They traveled extensively, both for pleasure and for Morton Publishing, and Marilyn teased Doug that he had jet fuel in his veins. Doug delighted in planning family trips and loved the time he was able to spend with his children and grandchildren.
Many philanthropic interests benefited from Doug's participation. He served on the Foundation Board, among many other committees, at his alma mater, the College of William & Mary, and was awarded the Alumni Medallion in 1995 and served as Grand Marshal at Homecoming in 2014. Doug also served on the History Colorado Board of Directors and on the President's Council for The Colonial Williamsburg Foundation. In addition, Doug served on the Board of Trustees and the Overseers committee at Cheshire Academy, which he attended after graduating from high school. Closer to home, Doug was an active member of the Monaco South Optimist Club.
In Doug Morton we have lost a husband, father, grandfather, philanthropist, and a great storyteller. And the ultimate Broncos fan, seldom missing a game in the past 50 years.
