Misc. Notes
Mr. and Mrs. V. R. Cromeenes of 520 C Street have received a detailed account of the action in which their son Pfc Alvis G. Cromeenes, was seriously wounded on Saipan, July 7, 1944.

According to the report, Pfc Cromeenes and 150 other Marines were cut off from the main lines.  For 15 hours, they battled the Japs, killing 1500 of them. When out of ammunition, the Marines used Japanese guns. They also captured three Jap tanks.

Pfc Cromeenes’ kneecap was torn off and the bones fractured during the fight. Out of medical supplies, Cromeenes tore his shirt in strips and tied it tight around his leg. He spread the remainder of the shirt over his leg to keep insects away.

Most of Cromeenes’ company was slaughtered on Saipan. Once before, his company was nearly wiped out – the battle of Tarawa.
Alvis is the youngest of five sons the Cromeenes have in service: Robert, fireman 2/c; Doris, Navy signalman; Earl in the Marines; and Corporal Harold in the Army. Corporal Harold was commended for bravery last week. He is in the Pacific somewhere.

Local Residents Visit Wounded Marine, Oakland
Mr. and Mrs. R.V. Cromeenes and Mrs. Alfred Pence have returned from the bay district where they went to visit Marine Pfc Alves Cromeenes, who has been returned to the states from the South Pacific battle area for hospitalization. Private Cromeenes had his left knee shot away during the battle of Saipan, after coming through the battle of Tarawa unscathed.
Private Cromeenes, the youngest of five sons of the R. V. Cromeenes have in service, told his family of the horrors of the South Pacific fighting and of the inhuman treatment the Japanese hand the natives of the islands they are fighting on. The local persons found Private Cromeenes hair had grown white during his absence. He is only 19 years old. Mrs. Pence is a sister of the young marine. He is expected to spend a furlough here when his wound is healed sufficiently well for him to travel. He is in the Navy hospital at Oakland.
Private Cromeenes has been cited by the President for bravery and has also received the Purple Heart medal.
