Former County Educator Dies At Houlka Home

Hon. A A Newell died suddenly at his home in Houlka, Miss., March 31. Death came to him without warning or a struggle. He was buried the next day at Houlka cemetery. The funeral at the church and the burial were attended by a great host of relatives, friends and former pupils who mourn his death.

Prof. Newell, as his former pupils fondly called him, was a native of Mississippi, having been born at Randolph in Pontotoc county. He was married to Miss Georgia Avent at Lafayette Springs, on October 15, 1889

His life was one of usefulness and devotion to his family, his church and his state. He was an educator of note, having served as Superintendent of Education of Pontotoc County for two terms, after which he taught in some of the best high schools of this and adjoining counties for more than thirty years. His pupils loved him and today pay strong tribute to his sterling character as a man and his ability as an instructor. Hosts of the attribute their success in life to the inspiration and training gained under his tutelage, a common remark among them being "A better man never lived."

After he retired from the teaching profession, he devoted himself to building his community, his church and his State. He served many years as mayor of Houlka. As an officer, he was fearless in the performance of his duties. His town enjoyed the good influence of his wise administration of its affairs. He served as a member of the School Board of his county for many years. He was a ruling elder of the Presbyterian church for 25 years. He was also an honored Mason. In his death Chickasaw County lost one of its best and most useful Christian citizens.

He is survived by his widow and seven children: Mrs. J G Graves, Houlka; Mrs. S F Carr, Leland; Mrs. H K Garner, Tribett; Dr. Ben L Newell, New Orleans; Mrs. W S Combs, Brandon; George A Newell, Puerto Castillo, Honduras; and Miss Frances Newell, Houlka.
