Misc. Notes
Forrest Aven, age 91, went to be with the Lord on Thursday, June 4, 2020, surrounded by his wife and children.

Forrest was born on Thursday, February 28, 1929, to Dreyfus and Ruby Aven in Grandfield, Oklahoma, in the southern part of Oklahoma near the Texas border, in a small farming community during the depression, and moved to Ardmore, Oklahoma when he was in the fourth grade with his younger brother Don.

At the beginning of WW II, the family moved to Midwest City, which was formed to build the Douglas aircraft in support of the war effort. The family moved again to Fort Worth, Texas after his graduation from high school. Although Forrest’s parents never attended high school, the eighth grade being their highest level of education, Forrest had a strong desire to attend college, in particular Texas Christian University (TCU). While in college, Forrest was a member of the Fighting Horned Frog band and, according to him, played a mean sax.

During his time in college, supporting himself working the graveyard shifts, he met the love of his life, Julia Carolyn Ricks.

During his time in college, he rededicated himself several times to Christ. During the end of his tenure at TCU, he was drafted in the Army for the Korean War. He was sent to Ft. Sam and then to Camp Rucker. After basic training, he auditioned for the base band and was accepted (whew!). The Army band was required to play for the USO and Officer's Club dances and he because he was not going overseas, and most importantly with his tour of duty nearly complete, Forrest and Carolyn married in 1953 -- a marriage that lasted 66 years. He returned to TCU upon leaving the Army and graduated in 1954 with a BA in Communication.

Forrest and Carolyn left Fort Worth after graduation, where he joined LTV. He worked for LTV for over 30 years retiring in the mid-1990s. The family lore was that he was hired because the hiring manager liked the way he signed his name.  Forrest was the Financial Planner for Air Defense & Special Programs, and before that for the Scout rocket launch vehicle program.

Early in their marriage, they had two children, Forrest (Frank) Jr. and Cheryl. The family attended First Baptist Church in Arlington, Texas where Forrest taught various levels of Sunday School, was ordained a Deacon, and was later Chairman.

Continuing his music career, Forrest joined the Dallas Cowboys band and played for several years at both the Cotton Bowl and Texas Stadium watching the Cowboys rise to prominence.

After his retirement from LTV, and Carolyn’s retirement from teaching for the Arlington Independent School District, they moved to enjoy their golden years at Holly Lake Ranch, Texas. Here they enjoyed the company of their friends, golf, and travel. Forrest and Carolyn were very active in their local church, Holly Brook Baptist Church, and their local community. Forrest was an active participate with both the Kiwanis and Shriners throughout his life. They moved to Austin in 2016 to be near their daughter, Cheryl.

As a lifelong Horned Frog, we are ecstatic he saw the golden years of Frog athletics after holding season tickets for over 30 years watching the worst football teams imaginable. The highlights he mentioned most often were the 2011 Rose Bowl victory, TCU joining the Big 12, and being in the stands to see TCU defeat UT in Austin with his daughter.

Forrest is survived by the love of his life Carolyn, their two children Forrest (Frank) Aven, Jr. and Cheryl Aven Taylor, their spouses Patti Piper Aven and John Scott Taylor, and three grandchildren -- Stephanie Taylor, Christopher Taylor, and Morgan Aven.

His parents, Dreyfus and Ruby Aven, along with his brother Don Aven preceded him in death.
