Doyle Cogburn passed away on Wednesday, April 14, 2010, in Willits surrounded by his loving family. He was 84.
He is survived by his loving wife, Helen (Johnson), daughter Leslie and her husband Robert Scaglione, son Russell Cogburn and his wife Tami, Grand Children Lanae Lamkin and her husband Luke, Curtis Shuster, Jeffery Cogburn and his wife Malenie, Ami Cogburn, and great-grand children Lilja Lamkin, Hayden Lamkin, Blighe Lamkin, Gunner Cogburn, Aiden Cogburn, Savannah Cogburn, Brian Retzloff, and Kevin Retzloff.
Doyle is also survived by a brother Floyd Cogburn and sister Patty Peeler of Fort Bragg, as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
Doyle was born in a small logging camp near the lighthouse in Casper on January 25, 1926. He worked as a mill worker, log peeler, then a postman in the Fort Bragg area until joining the CHP in 1957. He moved to Willits shortly thereafter, and retired from the CHP in 1977.
After retirement, he owned and operated Doyle's Jewelry, retiring to operate a fishing boat on the Fort Bragg Coast. After a few years, he retired from fishing and was a co-owner of Shoe Tyme.
In 1990, he then returned to work at "It's About Time", where his original jewelry business was located. Although Doyle had been repairing clocks since he was 7 years old, he was only now doing it as a business. We are sure that Willits will remember Doyle Cogburn as the friendly clock repairman who rarely charged for his services……especially if he knew you, which was most of Willits.
Doyle was a member of Willits Post 174 of the American Legion and Willits Lodge No. 231, F&AM. He also was a writer and wrote about 40 books, none are published to date but we plan to do that at another time.
Our father always said that he was a "Jack of all trades and master of none" but he mastered all of the above professions with ease and perfection. He was at the same time a wonderful, caring, giving and thoughtful father, "Grand Dad," and friend.
Doyle had many special friends that he shared coffee and apple pie with weekly. Bud Crews was most usually his daily cohort, but others were known to frequent his clock shop and home regularly as well
