Misc. Notes
Avent M. (Bud) Burton, was born on December 4, 1922 in the school teacherage in Meeteetse, Wyoming. He was the son of George Burton and Harriet Avent Burton. Bud died Wednesday, October 20, 2010, in Memorial Hospital of Sheridan County.

As a child and a young person, he spent a lot of time on the Avent Ranch, attending the old Avent School near Greybull, Wyoming. He rode horseback to school. He lived for one winter in a three-sided, partially built house in Greybull during the Depression when food and heat were scarce.

His brother Bill joined the Wyoming National Guard 115th Horse Cavalry. Bud discovered that Bill had three square meals and a little cash in the National Guard and soon he signed up. He served with General Pearson as a clerk at Fort Lewis, Washington.
When Pearl Harbor was attacked, his unit was federalized. Bud was then sent for officers’ training to Fort Hood, Texas. He then was deployed overseas to the European War Theater. He entered Europe at Omaha Beach during the Normandy Invasion and was assigned to the 70th Field, an artillery unit. Bud served in various capacities as a casual officer in several European operations.

Upon his return from World War II, he married Patricia (Patterson) Burton and raised Jim Burton and provided a home for Ron Knudtson during his high school years. After Pat’s death, he married MaryAnn in 1973 and parented her sons (David, Jeff, Jonathan, Barry, Billy, Kristofer, and Caleb) and led the family during the last 37 years of his life.

During that time, he was principal in Natrona County Schools and did psychological testing for the district. After serving for about 30 years, he retired in 1985 and later moved to Sheridan with MaryAnn.
