Near the end of the Civil War, the Reverend Samuel Pyles and his wife, Nancy, moved to Florida. During Reconstruction they left the United States in 1867 and emigrated to Brazil with a group of Confederate exiles who departed in the brig Derby from Galveston, Texas.
