In 1962, while sitting on the Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals (1957-1977), Judge Wisdom wrote the historic opinion ordering the admission of James H. Meredith to the University of Mississippi.

Judge Wisdom was one of the founding members of the Louisiana Republican Party. He was a recipient of the Medal of Freedom from President Clinton in 1994.

The Fifth Circuit building in New Orleans was named for him in that same year. The ABA bestowed the American Bar Association Medal, its highest honor, on Judge Wisdom in 1996.
