Received undergraduate degree from Rhodes College (Memphis) and then graduated, with honors, from Rochester Institute of Technology, School of Woodworking and Furniture Design in Rochester, New York.

Currently Stephen builds furniture of his own design, primarily on commission. His work can be found on display in the Tennessee State Museum of Nashville, as well as numerous corporate, ecclesiastical, and private collections throughout the Southeast.

Stephen originally was to be named Dabney Hull Crump, III, because his aunt could not have children and his father wanted him to be named after his grandfather since his uncle had no children. When the aunt found this out she went to the hospital to see Diana and told her she had terminal cancer and that she thought her husband, Stephen’s uncle, would probably remarry and therefore there was a good chance he would have a son and would want to name him after himself, Dabney Hull Crump. So Stephen’s name was legally changed to Stephen Beard Crump, named after his great uncle on his mother’s side of the family.
