Misc. Notes
Flora Sheila Neel Mead (Sheila) passed away, with her son Todd and his wife Pam by her side on February 16, 2023, after a long and grueling battle with Alzheimer’s disease. She was 77 years old.
The third of their five children, Sheila was born to Henry Clay and Flora Messer Neel on October 31, 1945, in Marianna,  Florida.
Other than the three years she lived in Oregon (near her son Rob and his family – and not far from her youngest son, Ross and his family in Seattle, Washington), and the one year she lived in Montgomery, Alabama (where she graduated from high school),
Sheila lived her entire life in the Sunshine State. From the small town of Greenwood where she grew up, to Lakeland, Winter Haven, Orlando, Lake Worth, Plantation, Davie, and finally Palm City, she was a Florida girl through and through.
Her Christian faith was central to her life, and Sheila was very involved in her churches in the various places she lived. She was a wonderful wife to her loving husband Fred Mead, as well as a tender mother of three and doting grandmother of seven. Sheila’s family was far and away the most important part of her life, and “Mama Bear” doesn’t come close to describing whatshe became if anyone spoke ill of her loved ones. She was quick to strike up a conversation and “never met a stranger”, and her generosity knew no bounds.

Fiercely independent and possessing an iron will, Sheila was also a driven and highly successful businesswoman, eventually creating her own commercial real estate company based in Broward County, Florida.

Before her health declined, Sheila worked out five days a week and ran marathons with Fred.  They also had a passion for horses…owning several of them, from pets to thoroughbreds that raced at such prestigious tracks as
Saratoga Race Course in Saratoga Springs, New York. She was also a dog lover, owning a wide variety of them over the years, from huge (Great Danes, Rottweilers and Bull Dogs) to tiny (a Shih Tzu named Mason).

Her father having been a “cattleman”, Sheila loved a good medium-rare steak paired with a bold red wine (“even Jesus drank wine,” she liked to point out). She was also a terrific cook and loved to try new recipes.

Sheila was predeceased by her parents H.C. and Flora Neel, her brother Clay Neel, and her husband Fred Mead.

She is  survived by her brother Ed Neel and sisters Glenda Pender and Nancee Neel; sons Rob (Amy), Todd (Pam) and Ross (Jenn); grandsons Mitch, Shane, Ben, Jack, and Brady; and granddaughters Courtney and Amanda.
