Misc. Notes
John M. (Jack) Stewart died March 27, 2017. He was born January 2, 1925, in Ripley, TN. He was preceded in death by his father, John, his mother, Ona Turner, and sister Jean. Survivors include his beloved wife of 68 years, Karin Adams; their 3 children Jean, John (Linda), and Alfred (Julia); grandsons John III (Gabbi), Michael (Danielle), Jeremy (Brandy), and Alfred (Erin); great-grandsons Noah and Josiah; cousin Delaine (Jim) Kelly, and four generations of Adams in-laws.

Jack graduated from Ripley High School. At age 18 he volunteered to serve in the Army Air Corps and trained in Meteorology at Vanderbilt and then at Yale. As First Lieutenant, he was in charge of Keesler Field (Biloxi, MS) Airport control tower and the air-sea rescue work team for the Gulf of Mexico.

In 1948, he completed his engineering degree at Vanderbilt, married Karin Adams of Nashville, and joined the General Electric Co. He and Karin moved to Schenectady, NY where he trained for 3 years in heavy equipment (turbine generators and utility power equipment). In 1951 they moved to Birmingham, AL. Jack worked as an industrial sales engineer for General Electric until his retirement in 1985. In 2012, Jack and Karin joined the Park Manor community in Nashville.

His Christian faith was most important to Jack. He was an elder and adult Sunday School teacher at both South Highland Presbyterian Church in Birmingham and later at Briarwood Presbyterian Church in Mountain Brook. He was active in a Bible study group that continued for over 50 years. Jack also served on the board of the Jimmie Hale Rescue Mission for 40 years. In recognition of his dedication and leadership, the Mission board named the Stewart Learning Centers in his honor.

Jack loved to travel and he planned many trips for his family. Together they visited every state in the U.S. except North and South Dakota, and they made several trips outside the U.S. He also loved being at home with family. Before he retired, Jack designed and began building a summer home in Beersheba Springs, TN. With help from their sons, he and Karin constructed a log house using old logs and salvaged building materials. They furnished it with yard sale treasures and filled it with love. For over 30 years, they have welcomed family and friends to this special place on the Cumberland Plateau.

Some who knew Jack will remember his sense of humor (and love of practical jokes), adept footwork on the dance floor, skill as a fisherman, and lengthy and heartfelt blessings before meals. But he will be best remembered for his faith in God, devotion to family, love of country, and strength of character.
