James Pattillo was the son of Reverend Samuel Pattillo and Fanny Hall Pattillo. He was the grandson of George Alexander Pattillo and Martha Varner Pattillo. He was born December 19, 1807 in Jackson Co., Georgia.

He married Lemira M. Puckett 1835 Pulaski Co., Georgia. They had five children: Henry Augustus, Charles S., Robert M., George Alexander and William.

This family were enumerated on the 1840 Census of Cass (Bartow) Co., and the 1850 census of Marietta District, Cobb Co., Georgia. James' age on the 1850 census was 43 and his occupation was a merchant-tailor.

James owned a tailor shop in Mariettta, Georgia which was completely destroyed by fire on November 25, 1854. This shop located on the town square was referred to by the name of Pattillo-Moore in 1852. The 1851 tax digest of Cobb Co. lists James Pattillo with two slaves and 250 acres of land.
James died between 1861 and 1869 in Marietta, Cobb Co., Georgia. He is found in the 1860 census of Marietta but is not found at all in the 1870 census. He is believed to have been buried near his son, William's grave, in the Marietta City Cemetery, Marietta , Cobb Co., Georgia Lemira is found living with their son, Henry A. Pattillo, in Cartersville, Bartow Co., Georgia in 1870.
