Robert lived with his paternal aunt, Annie Broan Aldrich, and his uncle, Dr. Addison Day Aldrich. His grandfather, John Broan, lived there as well. John Broan was born in England and was the progenitor of the Broan family in America.

Robert Broan served in World War II as Captain in USAAF as a B-26 bomber pilot and was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross and an Air Medal with 10 Oak Leaf Clusters. He participated in the D-Day invasion.

Obituary
Robert A. Broan, 85, formerly of Charlottesville passed away Monday, March 13, 2006, in a Richmond Hospital.

Mr. Broan was born May 11, 1920, in Calumet, Michigan, son of the late John Martin Broan and Susan Allen Broan. He was also preceded in death by his wives, Alice M. Broan and Wilma E. Broan; and a son, James M. Broan.

He is survived by two daughters, Carol Broan Sober and her husband, Wayne, of Corolla, North Carolina, Janet "Jo-Jo" Broan Clarke and her husband, Robert, of Midlothian, Virginia; a stepson, Joseph Porterfield and his wife, Joan, of Advance Mills, Virginia; two stepdaughters, Sheila Porterfield of Northport, Washington and Jerina Porterfield of Bohemia, New York; seven grandchildren; Leigh Anne Smith, Elizabeth Clarke, Andrew Clarke, Andrew Broan, Joey, Chris and Katie Porterfield.

Interesting fact!
Capt. Broan (uncredited) may be seen in last scenes of the movie “A Guy Named Joe” as the bomber pilot who was about to crash.
