Misc. Notes
Edith Hoshall Crump Hand passed away peacefully in the early hours of Saturday, September 12, 2015 after a joyful evening surrounded by her loving family.

Edie, who was known as a societal matriarch and grand beauty, was born in Memphis on May 12, 1926 to Elbert M. and Mary Adams Hoshall. She shared a close bond with her two sisters Betsy Darby and Helen Harding and attended Snowden Elementary and Central High School before studying at the Memphis Academy of Art.

In 1950, Edie married Dabney Hull Crump Jr. in a small ceremony the day after Christmas. She was blessed with three devoted children; Robert Hoshall Crump, Pamela Crump Handwerker and Dabney Hull Crump III. Edie and Dabney built their home, “Eagle Oaks” on Tuckahoe Lane, where they spent many happy years entertaining friends and family. Adventurous world travelers, they toured Europe, South America and parts of Asia until Dabney’s death in 1969.

Edie’s natural warmth and grace endeared her to a large circle of friends, and she socialized widely in the Memphis and Mississippi Delta regions. She was crowned Queen of Memphi in 1961. During her reign she entertained extensively and participated in charity work throughout the city.

In her early years, Edie was a celebrated model for Goldsmith’s and was inducted as a member of the Memphis Fashion Week’s Hall of Fame.

Edie was a long-time member of the Junior League, Memphis Country Club, The Memphis Hunt and Polo Club, Les Passees, Le Bonheur Club, Little Garden Club of Memphis, and Garden Club of America. One of her favorite “gatherings” was the “Tennis Group” where a wonderful group of friends gathered to play tennis and in the later years to watch tennis. Edie headed the group for several years and was called the “Mother Superior.”

Edie’s natural grace and kindness shone through to all those she touched, and she made her way through life with true elegance.
