Virgil Irby Pittman, 89, of Lake Charles died at 12:35 AM Saturday, September 12, 2009 in his residence surrounded by his loving family.

Virgil was born in Cadaretta, Mississippi and had lived in Lake Charles for 28 years and returned for the last three years of his life. He was born to Lillie Oswalt and Silas Alfred Pittman on March 2, 1920.

Mr. Pittman was a graduate of Cadaretta High School, he attended Wood (MS) Jr. College on a baseball and basketball scholarship. He graduated from Texas A&M University in Petroleum Engineering. While attending college he played football, basketball, and baseball where he received many awards and trophies including best all-around athlete.

He served in the United States Army Air Corp, then at the outbreak of WWII he transferred to the Navy and became part of the Lighter-Than-Air Division. He was stationed in South America at the Panama Canal to locate enemy submarines so ships could pass freely.

Virgil went to work for Magnolia Petroleum Oil Company, which became Mobil, as a Production Supervisor and retired in 1984 after 37 years with the company.

Virgil was a member of the Vivian Kiwanis Club. He was also a member of Oak Park Methodist Church where he was a member of the Methodist Men. Mr. Pittman was also a member of the Covenant Church in Lafayette, Louisiana.

He is survived by three daughters: Susan Pittman Coccari and her husband Edward of Yorba Linda California, Nan Pittman Flynn and her husband Timothy of Lafayette, Louisiana, and Jan Pittman Kalna and her husband John of Lake Charles, one sister Beatrice Woods and her husband John of Houston, MS, six grandchildren Edward Coccari, Jr., Michael Coccari, and Elizabeth Coccari, Mary Elizabeth Flynn, John Pittman Kalna, and Jared Louis Kalna.

Virgil is preceded in death by his wife Norma Mary Humphries and one sister, Vivian Pittman.

Mr. Pittman resided at Villa Maria and the family would like to give thanks to the staff and residence for their care, friendship, and love. His life was so fulfilling and he loved everyone there. In addition, the family would like to express their gratitude to Theresa and Debbie for their devotion and support.
