Many Danes independently joined Dutch colonization efforts because Denmark had no colonial program of its own.  These families were in New Amsterdam at the time of Governor Peter Stuyvesant.  At one point, Laurens Corneliszen van der Wel had suit brought against him by Peter Stuyvesant's sister at the same time the Thyssens had social connections with Peter Stuyvesant's sister (Thyssens and van der Wels were intermarried).
