On this 19th day of September in the year 1832 personally appeared in open Court before William H. Crawford Judge of the Superior Courts of the Northern Circuit of said state now sitting for Elbert County William Ward a resident of the State and County aforesaid, aged seventy three years, who being duly sworn according to law, doth on his oath make the following declaration in order to obtain the benefit of the provisions made by the Act of Congress passed June the 7 1832; that he entered the service of the United States  under the following named officers and served as herein stated.
That he Enlisted under Lieutenant Barley on the 19th day of March in the year 1776, was transferred to Captain Francis Taylor’s Company of the 2nd Virginia Regiment Commanded by Colonel [Alexander] Spotswood, Col Richard Parker and Major Samuel Hawes, was discharged from this service the 13th of March in the year 1778; that he resided in Culpepper [sic: Culpeper] County State of Virginia when he entered the service and joined his Regiment at Williamsburg in the State of Virginia; from thence marched to Fredericksburg; from Fredericksburg to Baltimore in the State of Maryland; from Baltimore to Christine Bridge [probably Cooch’s Bridge on Christiana River in Delaware] to Philadelphia in the State of Pennsylvania, from Philadelphia by water to Trenton in the State of New Jersey, from Trenton to Morristown, from Morristown to the Mountains, from the Mountains back to Philadelphia, thence to Brandy Wine [Brandywine PA], and was engaged in the Battle fought at that place on the 11th day of September in the 1777, from Brandy Wine after the Battle, marched to Germantown, from Germantown to White Marsh [Whitemarsh] Camp, from White Marsh Camp Back to Germantown, where he was engaged in the Battle fought at that place, with the British on the 4th of October 1777, from Germantown after the Battle there, to Valley Forge and went into Winter quarters.
Says that he was born in Culpepper County in the State of Virginia in the year 1759.
Says that he has no record of his age, there was one and that he had the same at one time in his possession, but cannot now tell where it is.
Says that he lived in Culpepper County in the State of Virginia until he removed to the State of Georgia which is about forty years since, and has resided in the State of Georgia ever since, and now resides there, he says he enlisted in the service.
The names of some of the Officers in the troops when I served to the best of his recollection were, General Weadon [sic: George Weedon], Colonel Febaker [sic: Christian Febiger], Colonel Spotswood, Colonel Richard Parker, and Major Samuel Hawes,
Says that he did receive a Discharge in writing either from Colonel Febaker or General Weadon from which he does not recollect which said discharge has either been lost or destroyed and he does not know what has become of the same.
And that he entered the service of the United States under the following named officers and served as herein stated: entered the service about the 1st day of July in the year 1780 as a substitute for John Pynn[?] in the Militia, and then was appointed a Sergeant under Captain Oldham, and was discharged from the service about the 31st of December in the year 1781. That he resided in Culpeper County State of Virginia when he entered in the said service, went from Culpepper County to Chesterfield Court House in the State of Virginia, where Colonel [Richard] Campbell took command of the Detachment, from Chesterfield Court House Marched to General Green [sic: Nathanael Greene] then in the State of North Carolina who took command of our detachment, and a few days afterwards [15 Mar 1781] fought the British Commanded by Lord Cornwallis at Guilford Courthouse, from thence to Camden in South Carolina and on the twenty 5th day of April in the year 1781 fought the British there, under the Command of Lord Rawdon [Battle of Hobkirk Hill near Camden SC], from Camden to Ninety Six and besieged that place [22 May - 19 Jun 1781]. Retreated from Ninety Six and afterwards marched to the Eutaw Springs where we fought the British again [8 Sep 1781].
Says that he was born in Culpepper County in the State of Virginia in the year 1759, and that he has no record of his age.
Says that he lived in Culpepper County State of Virginia when substituted into service, did live in the State of Virginia until he removed to the State of Georgia which is about forty two years ago, and have resided there ever since, and now resides there.
Says that he entered the service as a substitute for John Pynn. The names of some of the officers when he served, to the best of his recollection were, General Green, Colonel Campbell, Captain Oldham and Captain Edmonds.
Says that he did receive a Discharge as a Sergeant in writing signed by Captain Edmonds (my field officers all being killed) which said discharged has either been lost or destroyed, and have it not in my possession, and cannot tell what has become of the same. That he has no documentary evidence of his service & no person who can testify to his service.
He hereby relinquishes every claim whatever to a pension or annuity except the present, and declares that his name is not on the pension Roll of the Agency of any State.

NOTE: A size roll compiled at Chesterfield Courthouse after 1 Sep 1780 includes the following: Wm. Ward/ age 21/ height 5’ 7”/ farmer/ born and residing in Culpeper County/ brown hair/ gray eyes/ dark complexion/ enlisted 20 Sep 1780 for 18 months.
