William H. Henson served in the Revolutionary War as Col. Ben Cleveland's aide-de-camp. In 1785 William received a land grant of 200 acres in Franklin County, Georgia, on the Tugaloo River near Benjamin Cleveland's place. William and Cleveland were the first settlers on the Tugaloo River.

In the 1790 Pendleton, South Carolina, census William claimed eight sons and one daughter. In 1811 William received a 125-acre grant on Trammel Creek, Sumner, Tennessee. Trammel Creek was a part of Big Barren River.
