Leatrice Mayhall Timmons was educated at Florence State College, the University of Alabama and the University of Mississippi. She taught at Itawamba Junior College, and she was an English professor at the University of North Alabama for twenty-five years.

She was vice president and program chairman of the Itawamba Historical Society since December 1993.

Leatrice had a minor roll in the movie “Tomorrow” filmed in 1970 in Itawamba County staring Robert Duvall.

Leatrice’s future husband was a farm operations supervisor on her parents’ farm.

Leatrice Mayhall Timmons, 71, of Fulton, Mississippi, died Tuesday, June 10, 1997, at North Mississippi Medical Center, Tupelo, MS, of congestive heart failure.

The funeral was held on Thursday, June 12, at Fairview Baptist Church with burial in the Fairview Cemetery (Fulton, Mississippi), Senter Funeral Home directing. Officiating were Bro. Gene O'Brien and Dr. John Thompson.

She was a native of Itawamba County, born May 7, 1926, to Samuel Mayhall and Delaphare Barkley Mayhall. She was preceded in death by her husband, Hubert Timmons in 1989.

Mrs. Timmons was educated at Florence State Teachers College, The University of Alabama, and The University of Mississippi. She taught at Itawamba Junior College, and was an English professor at the University of North Alabama in Florence, Alabama for 25 years.

She was chairman of the Board of Directors of the Itawamba County Pratt Memorial Library, and an avid participant of the Retired Teachers Association. She was vice-president and program chairman of the Itawamba County Historical Society, and a member of Fairview Baptist Church.

Mrs. Timmons is survived by one daughter, Mary Dickey and huband Sammy, of Fulton; one son, William Timmons of Fairview; a grandaughter, Meg Dickey of Fulton; a grandson, Ralph Dickey of Fulton; and close friend, Pattie Jo Coggins of Tupelo.

Pallbearers include Kelley Timmons, Boby Wood, Wesley O'Brian, Wesley Graham, Larry Cromeans, Alfredo Giacometti, Mackey Harge, and Richard Burns.

Alvie Hubert Timmons, 73, died Oct. 12, 1989. He was a lifelong resident of Itawamba County, a horse trainer and breeder, and a member of the Tennessee Walking Horse Association.

Alvie served with the 317th Infantry Regiment, 80th Infantry Division, in General Patton’s Third Army as a combat medic during WWII and was awarded a Purple Heart for wounds received during the Moselle River Valley Engagement in September 1944.

He was a member of the American Legion. He was a member of the Fairview Masonic Lodge, the Scottish Rites and the Shriners. He was a past president of the Fairview RCDC, and a former member of the board of directors of the Itawamba County Hospital. He was a member of the Fairview Baptist Church. Services were Oct. 14 at the Fairview Baptist Church. Burial was in the Fairview Cemetery with Masonic rites.

Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Leatrice Timmons; one son, William Timmons of Fairview; one daughter, Mary Dickey of Florence, Ala.; four brothers, Vernon Timmons of Colorado Springs, Colo., Leroy Timmons of Russellville, Ala., Omer Timmons of Central, Ala., and Sam Timmons of Russellville, Ala.; one son-in-law, Sammy Dickey; one granddaughter, Meg Dickey.

Coincidentally, Alvie’s second cousin, Allen Vonzie Cromeans, was killed in Mozell, France,—eleven days before Alvie was wounded—while also serving in the Medical Corps with the 80th Infantry Division.
