Rev Joseph S Stockton, son of John C Stockton and Ruth Watson Stockton, was born in Itawamba County, MS June 25, 1845. They were in Itawamba Co before 1840, as they were on the census. When Joseph was only 16 years old, in February of 1862, he enlisted in the Confederate Army. In Captain Brumleys Company "C" 2nd Regiment MS Volunteer Infantry, commanded by John M. Stone. On August 18, 1864, he was wounded at the Battle of Weldons RR, near Petersburg, VA. This was some of the worst fighting of the war. On August 22, 1902 he applied for a pension, stating he was shot through both legs, right thigh and left shin. His pension was approved on September 9, 1902.

On December 20, 1966 he was married to Miss Frances (Frankie) Hughes. To this union seven children were born: Virginia Bell Stockton, born 1867 married George W. Dillard, Mary B Stockton, born 1869, married a Good, Laura L. Stockton, born 1870, married Charles Thorn, Harriett M. Stockton, born 1874, John Stockton, born 1875, married Lilly Fannie Ellis, William O Stockton, born 1880, married Lottie, Robert Lee Stockton, born 1883. Frankie died in June of 1884 and left children from 17 to three years old.

On June 25, 1871 Joseph Stockton was ordained a minister of the gospel in the Missionary Baptist Church. According to his obituary, he was a strong and forceful preacher, with a commanding appearance. A fine orator that always drew a large crowd. He was very influential in the Baptist Associations. He was extremely well versed in the Bible and brought many souls to Christ. He was pastor of the Friendship Baptist Church south of Bellgreen, Franklin County, AL from 1880 to 1884 and again from 1892 to 1901, when he asked the church to let him resign. He also preached in Tishomingo Co, MS and traveled with an evangelist named Rev. Yarbourgh.

On September 25, 1884 he married as his second wife, Tennessee (Tennie) Vance, daughter of D.B. Vance and Lettichia. They were the parents of eight children: Charlie C. Stockton, July, 1885 to August 1885, Maggie DeEtta Stockton, born 1886, married Edward A Byram, Samuel S. Stockton, born 1888, married Lena Isbell, Grady Homan Stockton, born February 7, 1891, married Josie E. Johnson, daughter of John Marion Johnson and Alice Waldrup , Minnie H. Stockton born 1892, married William F. Owen, Daniel Hughes Stockton born 1894, married Cora L. Burcham, Frances J (Fannie) Stockton, married a Tate, James S. Lee (Jim Lee) Stockton married Vivian Williams.
In 1872 Joseph joined the Pleasant Site Lodge Number 364 of Masons. Also while living in Franklin Co, AL he was elected to and served in the Alabama legislature. When Joseph retired he moved his family back to Tishomingo Co, MS where he died February 17, 1910 at his home near Belmont. he is buried in Joel Cemetery.
