Misc. Notes
Lord of Stoke and Admington. Title inherited from his maternal uncle. Information taken from Brent Memorial Brass in Warwickshire.

William is mentioned in the will of his uncle, Richard Colchester (1547), being referred to as "William Busten otherwise called Brent". Richard's will conferred on William "two parts of my Farme of Larke Stoke", and conveys all his titles of Stoke and Admington to William's son, Richard, the god-son of Richard Colchester, while "Also I will geve and bequeth to William Bussten al[ia]s Brent all suche interest state terme and terme of years that I have in the said Farme of Ilmyngton with....happurteinth And all other the Reisdue of my goods and Catells my Detts Legaccies funerall & bequest aforesaid I Doo geve and bequeth to the Said William Busten al[ia]s Brent whom I do make constitute and ordeyn my sole executor". It is curious that Richard Colchester should have by-passed all his brothers by granting his title to his god-son. It is also a question as to why William is listed as Lord of Stoke and Admington, unless his son, Richard, was not yet of age when Richard Colchester died.

There is also some question as to the place of birth and death of William and subsequent Brents of Stoke. Records concerning his father's migration list Stoke as being in Gloucestershire, while the family's burial place is at Ilmington in Warwickshire. English county boundaries have changed periodically, and that appears to be the case in this instance as modern maps locate Stoke in Warwickshire.
