Samuel Sinclair (ca. 1774-1838) and Rebecca Barrett (ca. 1758-1815) were married in Scotland in the 1780s. Soon after their marriage, they immigrated to Ireland and settled on a lease-hold near Cookston in County Tyrone.

They had six children, ca. 1786-1799. Two of the Sinclair sons, William and Gregory, immigrated to the United States in 1817 and settled in Lincoln County, North Carolina. The rest of the family followed in 1819. The family migrated to the Pleasant Valley area of Wayne County, Tennessee, 1833-1834.

Samuel Sinclair died at Pinhook, Tennessee. Descendants lived in Tennessee, Texas, Kentucky, Alabama, Florida, California and elsewhere.

Samuel Sinclair was born in Scotland and married his first wife there (name unknown). They had one daughter (name unknown) before she died. Samuel took as his second wife Rebecca Barrett. Samuel had one brother, Benjamin, and one sister Mary Sinclair Purvis. Both siblings immigrated to American and settled somewhere in Ohio.

Shortly after Samuel and Rebecca's marriage, they immigrated to near Cookstown, County Tyrone, Ireland where they leased 8 acres on the Hamilton Estate. Here their six children were born. Rebecca Barrett Sinclair and her son Samuel died of an epidemic in 1814. By 1817, the family had decided to immigrate to America.

On September 18, 1817, William and Gregory Sinclair set sail for America on the British sailing vessel the “Elizabeth”. They landed in Charleston, South Carolina, on November 1, 1817. They journeyed to where Gastonia, North Caroling now exists. Within two years, it was financially possible to bring the remaining family members to America. The family settled into the North Carolina hills and remained there for 16 years. Samuel Sinclair died and is buried in the Old Pisgah Cemetery. In 1833, the entire family loaded onto wagons and moved to Pinhook, Wayne County, Tennessee.

Samuel and Rebecca were members of the Seceder Church of the Sanoles Kirke, Cookstown, County Tyrone, Ireland.
