Barton served with the 1st Alabama Cavalry (Union) from 2oth of January 1863 (mustered in Fayette County, Alabama) as a private and mustered out as a corporal in Memphis, Tennessee, 22nd January 1864. He was captured on 26th of October, 1863, in the Battle of Vincent’s Crossroads.
