Misc. Notes
John Dickey went to sea and became a mariner when he was 27 years of age.

He dwelt in the new town of Are. But he later returned to Glasgow, lived in his father's house, and took over the skinner business. He did not become a master skinner; but he instead became a cordiner, making footwear from Spanish leather.

He bought land with a house on Nedder Barresszet, a tenement with yards and appurtenances. This land was located adjacent to property owned by Thomas Gayner or Gardner, his future father-in-law. His shop and yards were on Stockwell Street, near the bridge over the Clyde, nearly opposite the church and near the Merchants' House.

Misc. Notes
Janet Gayne Gardner married John Dickey during the first quarter of the sixteenth century . As John lived his entire life in Glasgow , Scotland , it can be surmised that Janet also lived there . Birth and death dates for Janet are not known , nor is it known exactly when they married .

The Dickey family was allied with the Clan Douglas and the Gardner family was allied with Clan Gordon . It is interesting to note that just a couple decades before their marriage , these two Clans were on opposing sides of a power struggle in Scotland . Clan Gardner , which supported King James II in this struggle , was a powerful force during their lifetimes.

The Gardner family was part of the Clan Gordon . The fifteenth century in Scotland was a time of great unrest . King James II saw the Clan Douglass as a threat to his power . The Clan Gordon were staunch supporters of the King . While the Clan Gordon moved south to aid the King , their lands were raised and the castle Huntly (Strathbogie ) was burned . However , once the power of the Clan Douglass was broken , the Clan Gordon grew unchallenged . Thomas would have been born around the time of these challenges and would have grown up in a time of great power for the Gordon Clan .
