The Family Bible of John Osborn Roberts has his name written John O. Roberds and his birth date written as April 22, 1791. His grave marker gives his birth year as 1792.
It is believed that John O. and his family settled in what is known as Eagle Creek Valley, Wayne Co., TN, moving there by covered wagon from Dickson Co., TN.
Charles Reeves brought a suit for slander against John O. Roberts, for saying that Reeves "stole horses, cattle and hogs." The plaintiff was awarded damage to the amount of $2.50.
John bought three slaves from J. J. BIFFLE & Co.: Milly, age 7; Fanny, age 5; and Bob, age 3, for $937.50.
"Motion and 2nd to take the vote of the church whether the fellowship Brother J. O. ROBERTS in remaining with the free Masons & the church agree to exclude him from the fellowship of the church he being present & agreeing to the act of the ch. in so doing.
John bought a slave named Henry (40 years old) for $500.00 from William POLLARD. There is no further information concerning Henry.
He was again asked to quit the "secret lodges of the free masons and partaking with them in their public Exhibitions." He again refused to comply and the church declared a nonfellowship and excluded him from the church.
