Riley served with the 1st Alabama Cavalry (Union) from 5th of May 1862 (mustered in Corinth, Mississippi) as a private and mustered out in Memphis, Tennessee, 22nd January 1864. He was captured on 26th of October, 1863, in the Battle of Vincent’s Crossroads.
