Fighting ,with his cousins, at the opening Battle of Shiloh in Mississippi, John Thomas “Jack” Wright, was wounded.

Company G,16th Alabama Infantry Regiment, Wood's Confederate Regiment hit the Union lines on April 6th and fought their way until held up at the "Sunken Road" where the Confederates brought up their artillery and the Union forces surrendered.

On that same morning Capt. R. G. Wright, a cousin with the 33rd Mississippi opened the engagement with a volley and attacked across Frailey's (sic) Farm--Sherman's headquarters was over run and Sherman withdrew with some of his troops across the woods. Another cousin of Jack's was Miles F. Wright who as a Pvt. in Co. G, 16th Alabama fought with Jack in this engagement as well as later at the Battle of Stone's River (Union name) or the Battle Murfreesboro, TN

Jack was again wounded at the Battle of Chickamauga TN. He fought with the 16th into Georgia and through those engagements.
