The family of John Lightsey grew up on a plantation in Colleton District, SC. He owned 1000 acres which he sold in 1816 and in the 1825 tax records he paid taxes on 1615 acres and 23 slaves in St. Bartholomew's Parish in Colleton District, SC.

This land was in three tracts, 200 acres, 50 acres, and 1365 acres which had the slaves. The taxable value of this land was $400 for the 200 acres, $50 for the 50 acres, and $275 for the 1365 acres. No plots have been found for any of this land.

The tax on the 23 slaves was $17.25. Another 1200 acres was located in Barnwell District on which $1.00 tax for 1825 was paid. Some of early state records dealing with the ferry across Edisto River mention Lightsey's Plantation. The Edisto River was navigable waterway and important to the cotton industry.

No record of John serving in the War of 1812 has been found. John Lightsey moved to the Barnwell District of SC after the 1820 Colleton District census and before 7 April 1823. John Lightsey died in 1829 and his children soon moved from South Carolina.

John and David Lightsey had already moved to Mississippi. Samuel, Jacob, Christian, and Elizabeth Lightsey moved to Georgia in the mid 1830s. George and Stephen Lightsey moved to Florida in 1830s. Mary Lightsey Howell died in 1831. Probate - Will: Barnwell District, SC, Probate Bundle 52, package 1 dated 1 May 1829. A sale of his estate was ordered for 1829. Total sale of items was $1,039.49 recorded as 7 Sept 1829 Barnwell District court records. His land was sold for the amount of the mortgage on the property. Land: Barnwell District, SC. Deed Book R, page 176 cites complaint from executors of Robert Miley against executors of John Lightsey for 1200 acres on Lemon Swamp. This appears to be a foreclosure. Deed Book Q, page 212 cites a mortgage for John Lightsey for $3,6717. Land: Barnwell District, SC, Deed Book J, page 68. Deed from John Litsey to Frederick Shuberd for 1000 acres on 12 October 179? located in Colleton District in the fork of the Salketchers on the Cowpen Branch of the Little Salketchers River. No land records have been found to indicate when or how John Lightsey came into possession of this land.
