Misc. Notes
William Tucker lived in the north part of Fayette County near Eldridge Alabama, in the Baron Creek community.

When Alabama seceded from the union, the Tuckers and most of their neighbors were union sympathizers. The men that were physically able, joined the 1st Alabama Calvary-the first integrated soldiers in the history of the USA and remained the only integrated unit until WWII.

This did not make the Baron Creek community popular with the slave owners in the southern part of the county. The Alabama Home Guard tortured William Tucker's youngest son, Henry Tucker. They hanged him upside down, skinned him alive, punched out his eyes, cut out his tongue, and scalped him. The book "Tories of the Hills”, written by historian Wesley Thompson, includes the capture and torture of Henry Tucker.

Note: But Tuckers vicious death was avenged. Home Guard leader Stoke Roberts who personally directed the torture of Tucker, was eventually caught by a group of unionists near Winfield. They took a long iron spike and drove it through his mouth and out the back of his head and nailed him to the root of a big oak tree.
