Misc. Notes
Clarence Ruble Maxey Jr., 63, died Monday, Jan. 14, 2008, at Gilmore Memorial Regional Medical Center in Amory after a sudden illness.

Ruble was born May 17, 1944, in the Hatley community to the late Clarence Ruble Sr. and Vera Lee Goodwin Maxey. He was a 1962 graduate of Hatley School, and he attended Mississippi State University.

He was married to Gloria Jean Vaughn in 1963. She survives. He was a member of the Mississippi Sheriff’s Association, a Mason, past Master of the J.A. Mayfield Masonic Lodge, a member of the ROCIC, and a board member of the North Mississippi Narcotics Association. He enjoyed car racing.

Ruble recently retired as the Monroe County sheriff, where he served four terms. Before being elected sheriff, he served two terms as a Justice Court judge of Monroe County. Prior to going into politics, he was a teacher at Hatley School and at the Monroe County Vo-Tech for a number of years. He saw a vision for our youth and spent many years serving the people and youth of Monroe County. He enjoyed spending time with his families, both at home and at work. His favorite time of year was Christmas and it was always a big production at the Maxey house.

One regret he voiced to his family was that he didn’t get to work his last week at the office. He wanted to spend that last week with his work family and to prove he was right one last time. When he wasn’t working, he was on his way to the race track, going golfing, or working on his farm. He touched a lot of lives, and a lot of people touched his life.

Survivors include his wife, Gloria Jean Maxey of Amory; one son, John Maxey of Hatley; three daughters, Tracy Jean Conwill and her husband, Greg, of Tupelo, Tammy Patrice Howell and her husband, David, of Hatley, and Tanya Horton and her husband, Mark, of Hatley; two sisters, Linda King and her husband, Herman, of Smithville, and Dessie Edge and her husband, Donald, of Smithville; his mother-in-law, Estell Vaughn of Hatley; three grandchildren, Josh Maxey and Sarah Beth Maxey and their mother, Jane; and John Michael Howell; several nieces and nephews; and a brother at heart, Jimmy Morgan and his wife, Sarah.
