David Porterfield Adams Jr was born on March 8, 1931 in Nashville, Tennessee, the son of David Porterfield Adams II (1895–1954) and Mildred Garrett (Goodpasture) Adams (1904–1994).
He enlisted in the US Marine Corps and served during the Korean Conflict.
After attending Montgomery Bell Academy he graduated from Davidson College and furthered his education with post graduate work at both Vanderbilt and Northwestern.
David was married about 1983 to Wendy Oehlert.
His talent and charisma allowed him success as both a financial analyst and as a joint proprietor with his wife of the Adams Edgeworth Inn in Monteagle, Tennessee and the Adams Hillborne Inn at Chattanooga, Tennessee. He was loved for his cheerful disposition, quick wit, interesting conversation and integrity.
Living in Atlanta, Georgia, David was 87 years old when he passed away peacefully at home on January 26, 2019.
He was preceded in death by his parents and by his sister Comfort (Adams) Randolph of Nashville, Tennessee, while survivors included his wife, two sons and a daughter-in-law, a married daughter, two stepdaughters, two married brothers, grandchildren, nieces and nephews and grandnieces and grandnephews.
David donated his body to Emory University School of Medicine for research, and Memorial Services were held at his family summer home in Beersheba Springs, Tennessee .
