Came to Virginia in the Charles in, 1621, and settled in Elizabeth City and at age 18 was given as “servant” in the muster of Mr. Edward Waters.
On 6 August 1634 the Privy Council directed a letter to the Governor and Council of Virginia recommending that Adam Thorowgood, Gentleman, for sprecial services and industries performed for the good of the colony, be allowed land on “the Cheasapeakean River to the southward of the Bay, where it may be most convenient for him”. As a result he received a patent on 24 June 1635 for 5350 acres at Lynnhaven, Princess Ann County, Virginia. Adam's house, built between 1634 and 1670, is said to be the oldest standing dwelling in Virginia.
Thorowgood was a memeber of the first court held for Lower Norfolk County, 15 May 1637, and met with the court as a member, 21 November 1638.
