Dr. Frederic Venable Hughes was born in Springfield, Washington County, Kentucky, August 22, 1831 and educated in Washington Academy of that town. He subsequently studied medicine in the medical college, St. Louis, graduating before he was 21 years old.

In 1850 he came to Texas and settle in Indianola. A year later he attended lectures at the University of Pennsylvania and returning to Indianola, he engaged in the drug business.

He left Texas for Virginia where he farmed and practiced medicine. He returned in 1860 and started a plantation on the Guadalupe River. He attended the sick and wounded in New Orleans during the civil war.

In 1872 he moved to Dallas with his sons where engaged in manufacturing.

Mother of Several Dallas Residents Passes Away at Her Home.
Mrs. Mary Elizabeth Venable Hughes was born Oct. 29, 1829 in Mecklenburg County, Virginia. Her father was Dr. Paul C. Venable. She has been in Texas fifty-two years, and in Dallas thirty-one. Her husband died some time ago. She leaves five children -- George V., John F. , F. B., Mrs. C. H. Calhoun and Miss Mary V. Hughes.
