Baltimore Co. Court Proceedings, Hall of Records, Annapolis, MD. It states that Thomas, who was age 21 and over, was bound over to Robert Shanks of Wapping, Middlesex, England "or his assigns for 4 years after his arrival in Maryland, 20 August 1684."


Wapping is an area of the London docks where Shanks probably operated as an agent, signing up emigrants whose indentures were resold to ship captains or landowners in Maryland. 3. He would have completed his indenture in 1688 and probably married and acquired his 100 acres of land soon after. 4. The spelling of the name on this document is with an "i" and two "b's".
