He retired leaving the business to his son. friends and family members said Mr. Redd's chief concern in life was helping those less fortunate than he.
Mr. Redd, the son of a sharecropper, grew up poor in Lincoln County, said Bob Pittman, president of the Mississippi Economic Council and author of a biography about friend Mr. Redd, Good for What's Buggin' You.
"He was a very giving and caring person," said his son-in-law, Bob Buckley of Columbus. "He just wanted to serve."
For Mr. Redd, service was a priority, Pittman said. He wanted to serve his fellow man, and "he used his resources from his business to do just that," Pittman said. Mr. Redd was a former member of the Jackson School Board and past vice president of the Mississippi School Boards Association. He was a current member and past chair- man of the Mississippi Economic Council.
In 1973, Mr. Redd was president of that council, which has a program that helps train emerging young leaders in the state. The program, the J.C. and Annie Redd Leadership Mississippi program, was named after Mr. Redd and his wife after he donated a large sum of money to it.
Also, in 1973, Zurich-American Insurance Co. of New York named Mr. Redd one of the top three outstanding small business leaders in America, Pittman said.
