South Carolina
Barnwell District
To the ? , the Senate and House of Representatives
Whereas, this humble petition of Edi Red of the State & District aforesaid, humbly showeth to your honourable bodies that - she was the then lawful wife of Job Red, who has lately died (1839), and who was enrolled for the last twenty years before his death as a State pensioner for service received as a Revolutionary soldier.
The said Job Red, and myself underwent many privations and hardships during the old war, - during which time we had our houses burnt - and everything was possessed in the events, - and also, my husband, the said Job Red. was badly wounded by the Tories, - which wound rendered him unable to do any bodily labour so long as he lived.
Your petitioner is left quite poor and ? of any property to support on. My friends and relations are not able to support me in my old days, - I am very infirmed, not able to do any sort of business, - I am seventy, eighty odd years old.
It is hereofon hoped that your honourable bodies will take my case into consideration, and make me a pensioner during my natural life, - and as in duly bound, your petitioner ? ? pray
