George Washington Messer, age 22, enlisted on 13 Aug. 1861. He was assigned to Company D, of the 17th Georgia Volunteer Infantry, known as the 'Decatur County Guards'. He received a fifty dollar bounty in addition to his six months’ pay of sixty-six dollars, but he had to provide his own gun. He was wounded in the hip at Manassas Junction, Virginia, but recovered and returned to his Company. George surrendered with his Company on April 9th and paroled on 10 April 1865 at Appomattox, Virginia.
