James Miller moved into Augusta Co., VA. before 1741 as Baptismal records of the Reverend John Craig indicate. Reverand Craig began his ministry in 1740 and his records show the following baptisms for James' children:
Jean 4 Oct. 1741
John 27 Feb 1744
David 1 Jun 1746
Catherine 28 Nov 1748
Apparently Abraham, an older son, had previously been baptized.
James received deeds for four parcels of land in 1748, 1749, and 1751, totaling 512 acres. He sold 300 acres 25 March 1754 and the remainder 21 August 1754, after which he apparently moved to Rowan County, NC. It is significant that the deeds were signed: James Miller, "Taylor" and "Cathorine" Miller.
On 26 Nov., 1753 John Brandon, Jr. was granted 640 acres on Buffalo Creek between the Western Path and John Nesbits. Brandon sold this land to James Miller on 20 Jul., 1756. James Miller kept it intact until 1 Apr., 1762 when he gave "231 acres on the west side of Dutch Buffalo Creek bordering Robert McPherson" to Abraham Miller "for the annual rent of one pepper corn at the feast of St. Michael and the Archangel:. Because of this unusual agreement, I believe Abraham was James Miller's oldest son. Also, this deed was signed by James and Catherine Miller in the same manner as on 1754 deeds in Augusta Co., VA. Two years later (23 Nov., 1764) James sold the remainding (409 acres) to David Miller, who I believe was another son.
