Gentleman farmer (1200 acres called "More and Case It"), William Bozeman was the Land Commissioner for Lord Baltimore.

Several references including "A Memoir of John Leeds Bozman" say the family was of Dutch (includes Belgian) origin. Some sources list him as born in Holland in 1609. This doesn't fit neatly with his Church of England affiliation. Brought by Ralph Barlowe, the Memoir of John Leeds Bozman says in Chesapeake as early as 1627.

Most of the information about William appears in the book "Old Somerset of the Eastern Shore of Maryland". Another useful book is "They Lived in Somerset" by Wilmer Lankford, rpt. in 1990 by Manokin Press. I have not seen "The Boston Family of MD" 1986 by Delmar Press but it apparently contains information.

William is listed in "Early Virginia Immigrants 1623-66" as being in Virginia in 1649. Osiris Johnson provided the name of Ralph Barlowe as the one who brought him and his name does
appear as headright to a patent for land granted to Ralph Barlowe in 1649. The practice of British aristocrats founding colonies was to give huge tracts of land to future "American
nobility" who, in return, had to sign on a certain number of colonists to come along with them.

He was named by the court of Accomack Virginia as one of the men to "call together and command" the settlers between Manokin and Pocomoke River for defensive measurs in Nov. 1663. His home was on the north side of the Manokin River, just east of John Elzey's home. In May, 1664, Bozman (with Stephen Horsey and William Thorne) was named by the MD authorities to serve on a commission for granting land warrants and administering justice
in the "Easter Shore below Choptank River"
