Robert lived with his paternal aunt, Annie Broan Aldrich, and his uncle, Dr. Addison Day Aldrich. His grandfather, John Broan, lived there as well. John Broan was born in England and was the progenitor of the Broam family in America.
Robert Broan served in World War II as Captain in USAAF as a B-26 bomber pilot and was awared the Distinguised Flying Cross and an Air Medal with 10 Oak Leaf Clusters. He participated in the D-Day invasion.

The funeral of Mrs. Wilma Sams Broan, wife of Robert A. Broan, was to be at Charlottesville’s Christ Episcopal Church, of which she was a member, with burial following in Monticello Memorial Park. The former Danville resident died in the University of Virginia Hospital.
She was born in Columbus, Georgia, Dec. 28, 1918, a daughter of the late Clay Franklin Sams and Mattie Neely Sams, and attended Stratford College.
She was graduated from the University of Virginia, School of Nursing, and served in the Army Nurse Corps during World War II.
In addition to her husband, she leaves a son, James M. Broan of Neenah, Wisconsin.; two daughters, Miss Carol S. Broan of Virginia Beach and Miss Janet M. Broan of Charlottesville and currently a student teacher at Cedarbrook Elementary School in Danville, and one brother, Eugene Sams of Baltimore, Maryland.
