Col. George W. Clayton, commander of the 62nd North Carolina Infantry Regiment was instrumental in defending Asheville (Battle of Asheville) from invasion on April 6, 1865.
Col. Clayton missed the official surrender at Cumberland Gap because he had Typhoid Fever and led the unsurrended portion of the regiment thereafter.
