John M. Brown (CSA) was a Lt. Col. in a Georgia militia unit known as the Georgia State Line. He was also the brother of Governor Joseph E. Brown.
As the Federal Army began creeping closer to Atlanta, militia units such as his were activated to help defend the city and plug holes in the Confederate line. During the Battle of Atlanta on July 22, 1864, he is severely wounded. Carried off to the governor's mansion in Milledgeville, he succumbs to his wounds on July 25th.
